The early brake shoes have a different design of the adjusting screw. The difference is in the notch where the brake shoe fits. The early ones have a straight notch, while the newer ones have a jeweled notch. The early brake shoes have two identical, beveled ends, at the bottom and at the top. The later ones, on the other hand, are beveled at the top and straight at the bottom. In many cases, they can get mixed up over the decades and this can also be an explanation for the fact that it is not possible to adjust the brakes accurately.
