The durability of the steering gear is also determined by the level of maintenance and the use of high-quality lubricants. The steering box oil provides good lubrication and protection, although after a lot of use the seals on the input side (steering shaft) and output side (pitman arm) can leak, allowing the lubricating oil to escape from the steering box. A steering box without proper lubrication will wear out much faster, which has serious safety and cost consequences.
