These retaining caps bolt onto the outside of the differential housing where the driveshafts enter the differential. These are plastic covers that will crack beyond repair if you don't use the original plates underneath as specified by Volkswagen. This is the most common reason why replacement is needed. If the old plates are still straight, you can reuse them without any problems. We recommend ordering new plates, which are available under the options tab. They should be slightly curved to prevent the tension on the retaining bolt from loosening, which is unlikely to be the case with the old plates.
