The Type 2 gearbox was fitted with reduction boxes from 1949 to 1967 to create a stronger transmission and create more space under the vehicle. There are 4 gears and 8 bearings (on each side) in the reduction boxes running in an oil bath. With regular maintenance and proper use, these parts are not easily damaged, although after many kilometers the gears and bearings may show wear. On the 08/63 model, you can only pull out the inner bearing underneath after first undoing the inner retaining nut and removing the shaft from the bearing. This nut is only accessible through the housing plug at the rear of the reduction box and is often damaged during disassembly. It is also recommended to replace the lock nut that secures the shaft to the bearing for reliable and proper fixation. BBT now supplies high-quality housing plugs and lock nuts from stock.
