The purpose of these grease seals is to seal the connection between the Beetle and Karmann Ghia control arms and the front axle until 08/65, so that the lubricating grease remains on the front axle and sand and moisture cannot penetrate the front axle housing. The latter has quite destructive consequences on the running surfaces of the front axle bearing and control arm, so cracked, hardened ones must be replaced immediately
