These retaining caps bolt onto the outside of the differential housing where the driveshafts enter the differential. These are plastic covers that will crack beyond repair if you don't use the original plates underneath as specified by Volkswagen. This is the most common reason why replacement is needed. For the late T1 buses from October 64, all T2 buses from 1968 until the end of production until July 1979, these were the rear fenders of these types. They were also on the T1 T2 Brazil buses, and on the Type 181. The corresponding brackets are 1459-250 on the T1, Kübel and T1 Brazil, the bracket for this rubber was (with one screw on the half-axle housing), and 1459-251 was for these same types, mounted on the half-axle housing with ONLY 2 screws!!
